COOKING UP AN OPERATIC FEAST

Stefano Giulianetti is cooking up a special treat for fans and foodies alike. Not a pasta carbonara, but an actor role in Vancouver Opera’s Don Pasquale playing February 10, 15 & 18, 2024 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Giulianetti plays the greasy cook alongside a chain-smoking chambermaid (Colleen Winton) and a prehistorical porter (Thomas Jones). While actor roles in an opera are rare, the three comic characters add pepper to the pot as Don Pasquale’s world bustles with a ramshackle vibrancy. The trio wisely leaves the singing to the rest of the all-star cast led by Maestro Jacques Lacombe.

This production is given a mid-20th century Technicolour makeover by the acclaimed creative duo of André Barbe (design) and Renaud Doucet (direction) bringing the immensely popular 1843 Italian Opera to life with all the delights of 1960’s Rome. Gaetano Donizetti’s comic masterpiece of inter-generational jealousy and reconciliation, young love, and madcap machinations bursts with vivid colour and endlessly engaging melodies.

IT AIN'T OVER UNTIL...
With many readers wondering where the past few ‘Much Ado’ issues went, the editors wanted to reassure them that the proverbial lady has not yet sung and Giulianetti’s 25-year performance career has remained quite active. Giulianetti has been busy with voice overs, emceeing events and unique theatre projects. Carmen Aguirre's Fire Never Dies and Art Heist by TJ Dawe and Ming Hudson are just two of the ‘lost stories’ since the last issue.
